The Convent of Bernardas, located in the heart of the charming Algarve city of Tavira, was commissioned to be built in 1509 by King Manuel I and subsequently assigned, in 1530, to the sisters of São Bernardo, nuns of the Cistercian Order.
The rehabilitation of this building earned Eduardo Souto de Moura, an architect, the Pritzker Prize. The 2017 European Prize for Intervention in Architectural Heritage.
